In this interview, Devin Stewart, Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at Emory University, discusses the origins and development of Islam, with particular emphasis on the origins of the Shiite and Sunni traditions and their historical development in relation to the theological and political issues of the time. Stewart discusses the notion of the “Four Rightly Guided Caliphs� and how that term came into common usage, the response to political struggles in early Islam.
